But if you don't watch it life has a way of biting you on the bum! The bad weather during the two summers of my retirement thus far have put paid to the boating trips and long weeks in the caravan that I had been planning.
I never give up hope though. Next year, or the year after maybe, me and 'im indoors will do all the floating and travelling that we dreamed about. He still hasn't retired fully you see. He still works four mornings a week but has all the school holidays off. Sounds wonderful doesn't it? Well it would be if it stayed dry during the school holidays, but of course it hasn't so far. Also (I'm going to grumble about other people's children now - sorry other people's children) as we can only go away in the school holidays, everywhere is twice the price, crowded and noisy. Mainly due to "other people's children". (There, I told you I was going to grumble.)
The good news is that 'im indoors has decided he's had enough of work (at last!) and plans to retire at Easter. All things considered that is. We have a financial commitment to my Mum until she sells her home in Essex because she's having to pay for stuff in two places, having moved near to me now. If, no let's be positive, WHEN the place in Essex sells then he'll retire. Let's just hope the place sells before the end of next summer so we don't miss out on more chances to get away.
You've probably noticed that I haven't been blogging on a regular basis for some time. I'm just getting used to a new routine. Now that my Mum's just round the corner I'm loving seeing her most days and my usual way of doing things has changed. Inevitably I suppose. I see Noodle 2 and her Mum most days too. We all go shopping together sometimes. The other day someone stopped us and asked if we were four generations of the same family. We were very proud to say, "Yes". "How wonderful", was the response, which pleased us immensely.
I've added a picture of the winter display of a type of clematis which I think is lovely this close to Christmas. This week we've moved the caravan into it's winter quarters and layed up the boat for the winter too. Sad jobs in a way but it was satisfying to get those jobs done and to know we don't have to worry about them now until the early spring.

Tomorrow is my birthday and we're having a family meal out in the evening. I'm really looking forward to it. Son's wife is coming too. We haven't seen her since July. Should I feel honoured?
When I retired I wondered how long it would take me to stop thinking about work. By that I mean comparing each day with how it used to feel to have to go to work. I wondered if I would slip into a routine that meant I would forgot which day it was and would just drift around.
I do still think of work sometimes but I have now stopped wondering what "they" are doing at 3.00 or 4.00 o'clock. Except on a Tuesday, when I look after Noodle 2 all day. Just me and her. Then I count my lucky stars, as I go round to my daughter's house at 7 in the morning, and remember that I'm the luckiest person in the world NOT to be going to work today!

Pretty much a carbon copy of my life at the moment, Flick. We have managed to get away for a holiday together this year, but we are trying to sell our house to downsize and then start some serious travelling while we can!
Glad to see you back though.

How lovely to have your family close to you. Sounds as if you're having a great life at the moment, regardless of the weather.
Here's hoping for a good summer, next year. You never know.
Good to have you back, even if it's only for one post! (Hope not.)
Sorry - forgot to say - have a great birthday tomorrow and a lovely evening out!
Happy Birthday for tomorrow!
Love the dandelion photo.
I know what it is like having to have holidays in school holiday time. The dearest time of the year and of course everywhere is packed.
However, I think I would miss work if I didn't go out & have some kind of routine. I'd miss the money though it isn't much.
Would probably blog all day!
Happy Birthday to you, dear Flick xx
may you have many more
My mum is retired too and she says exactly the same thing, she doesn't know how she fitted it in, my gadgetmaddad retires in April when he has his 65th and when you phone them, he'll shout how many weeks he's got left, 22, 19, 16 etc, he can't wait !
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!
Dusty - what a truly lovely post. Full of warmth and family values. I think you have got the balance just right - bloging will be here long after your mama isn't so you are right to spend the time you have with her. Glad you are getting to see the noodle's. And yes, may the Gods of weather give us a flippin break next year eh?
Happy birthday Flick - hope you have a great day.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY FLICK!!!! my parents say that they don't know how they ever found the time to work!!! they have VERY active retirements!
Strawberry Jam Anne - Plans are so tantalizing aren't they? Hope it works out for you soon. Flick xx
Mean Mom - I can tell what a lovely voice you have! I should have booked you for my birthday dinner. You could have led the singsong. Thank you for your good wishes too. Flick xx
Maggie May - I think you underestimate yourself. A resourceful person such as yourself will find plenty to amuse yourself with when you finally stop work. Thanks for the good wishes. I had a lovely day. Flick xx
Auntiegwen - Thank you so much for your good wishes. I can remember counting down to my retirement - except that I started 2 years before!! (Not that keen, you can tell...) flick xx
t&c - Thanks for the good wishes and the lovely chat we had this morning. Love, flick xx
Thanks MOB - Our people are very special and I feel truly blessed. I know I'm lucky to have my family so close. I treasure them daily. Flick xx
scrappysue - thanks for your good wishes. How's your weather? Glorious I suspect (no sign of jealousy here you notice) Flick xx
I hope the weather improves so that you can enjoy your retirement more.
btw I feel that way about other peoples' children on holiday, too! We're trying to find somewhere to go next summer (in the school holidays, of course) that's quiet, but interesting, with things for daughter to do, but no other kids to annoy us. Bit of a Holy Grail, I think!
Hope you had a lovely birthday!
Sorry, a very late catching up with you, Flick. It sounds as if your life is moving along nicely. So sorry I missed your Birthday, but I hope you had a lovely day.
I envy you seeing the family most days - of course I used to see Daughter and Grandson, but now they're not round the corner any more! Enjoy it while you can. M xx
The happiest of belated birthdays to you, Miss Spider! We have all been remiss in our blogging lately, but it's quality, not quantity, right?
Hope you had a wonderful day.
Hope you've had a good Christmas. Award for you over at my place. WM x
I can empathise with so much Flick. Since I "stepped back" from the office (I will probably never fully retire)I have found my days just go by in a flash. Happy New Year to you and your family. And happy boating next summer (hopefully)
